Mr. Tarpey is recognized as one of the most successful grape growers in the San Joaquin Valley.
He grew his vineyard from 160 acres to over 1200 acres.
He was a leader in the four year battle between independent grape growers and the California Wine Association.
He was also involved in state and local politics.
He was married to Emma M. Brainbridge in 1878 and they had two children, Arthur and Emma.
