Description
In 1934, the Dinuba, CA, fire department had four full-time, paid staff; S. B. Smith, Raleigh Green, Guy Ward, and Paul Nesgis. Additionally, there were 12 volunteer members of the department. Shown here with engines still on display at the department in 2002 are, left to right: Solon B. Smith, Captain, Secretary of the department, and driver; Raleigh B. Green, later Superintendent of Streets; Vern Stockholm, Chief; Leon Dial, Second Assistant Chief; Oliver Green, hoseman; Clarence (Blick) White, hoseman; Paul Nesgis, driver and pumper; Rawleigh Babcock, hoseman; Phil Baumbach, hoseman; Jack Hartung, engineer and mechanic (partner in Art Randolph Garage); Hilton (Heiney) Heimbach, First Assistant Chief and later Chief; Andy Bolinger, hose captain; Robert Collins, hoseman; George Stanton, assistant engineer; and Guy Ward, driver and first aid captain. One other volunteer, not available for the photo, was Al Bell, hoseman. Dr. Palmer D. Miller was the official physician for the department, and regularly taught the men first aid.
