Description An account of the resource Picture of Round Mountain Elementary School, a one-room structure with surrounding veranda constructed in 1884. Western Stick architectural style. This building replaced the first schoolhouse, built in 1872 and destroyed by fire in the early 1880s. The replacement schoolhouse was first situated on the east side of Fancher Creek, just north of Shaw Avenue. It was later moved to the intersection of Ashlan and Madsen avenues, and enlarged by moving three of the outer walls even with the roofline. The school was vacated in 1947, torn down and its lumber used to build a private residence. The Round Mountain District was created in 1873, annexed the Eureka District in 1904 and a portion of the Fancher District in 1914, and merged with the Fairview and Gray Colony districts in 1947 to form the Fairmont Union District. This entity, in turn, was incorporated into the Sanger Unified School District in 1965. This unit of the campus was built in 1923 and demolished in 1953. Norman F. Marsh was the architect. Constructed of reinforced concrete with Neoclassical architectural elements. Building contained a 1,200-seat auditorium and included music rooms, laboratories, a drawing studio, and classrooms for home economics, manual training and agriculture. The Selma Union High School District was created in 1892, and became part of the Selma Unified School District in 1967. Description An account of the resource Picture of Sentinel Elementary School, located two miles north of the intersection of Morgan Canyon and Tollhouse roads, near Tollhouse, Calif. Western Stick architectural style. The schoolhouse consisted of one room, measured 24 x 28 feet, and was built with lumber hauled in from the Meadow Lakes area. John McDowell donated the land for the school and Peter Donahue contributed materials for construction. In 1887, a small cemetery was founded adjacent to the school property. The schoolhouse was destroyed by fire in 1938 and a replacement structure was built nearby. The Sentinel School District was created in 1876, suspended operations in 1943 and merged with the Sierra Union Elementary School, which became later Sierra Elementary School, part of Sierra Unified Schools, in 1947.
