Description An account of the resource The Fresno County Old People's Home was built in 1907 on the south side of Ventura Avenue and was in use until 1922 when the facility moved into the remodeled orphanage on Tenth Street and Ventura Avenue. This is probably the Tenth and Ventura facility. It was in use until 1957 when the land was needed for a juvenile detention facility. The elderly were then placed in a group of four buildings on the corner of Huntington Boulevard and Barton Street. Description An account of the resource Located in block bounded by K (later, Van Ness), Fresno, M and Tulare streets. Constructed in 1874-1875 by California Bridge and Building Co. of Oakland for $56,370. Original building dimensions were 60 x 97 feet, and were substantially increased in later years. View is looking north, with Fresno Christian Church tower (built 1887) visible in middle right. Between the church and the Courthouse is the Central (later known as the Hawthorne or White) Grammar School, which opened in 1879. The Courthouse was demolished in 1965-1966. It was originally a 1 story brick building in 1881 when the Expositor moved to Fresno from Millerton. In 1888 a second story was added. The printing presses were located on the main floor and editorial offices were above.
