The school began operating in September of 1897 at the intersection of McCall Avenue and Arrants Street. By 1904 the building was crowded and in 1911 voters approved a bond issue to build a larger high school on the same campus. In 1913 the original high school was moved across Arrants Street to serve as an annex to East Side School, which was renamed Garfield School in 1914 in honor of James A. Garfield, twentieth United States president. The old high school was called Garfield Annex and later the Jefferson Building. Funded by a grant from the California State Library, the "Shades" project is a collection of more than 300 photographs provided by the Chinese and Japanese residents of Tulare County. Spanning the decades from the late nineteenth century until the present day, these images are a representation of the history and heritage of the Chinese and Japanese residents of Tulare County. Photographs of farm life, early businesses, athletics, the Visalia flood of 1955, the Japanese relocation camps, and family groups are just some of the varied elements of this collection.
