Description An account of the resource The Fresno County Old People's Home was built in 1907 on the south side of Ventura Avenue and was in use until 1922 when the facility moved into the remodeled orphanage on Tenth Street and Ventura Avenue. This is probably the Tenth and Ventura facility. It was in use until 1957 when the land was needed for a juvenile detention facility. The elderly were then placed in a group of four buildings on the corner of Huntington Boulevard and Barton Street. Description An account of the resource Drying yard in Selma, California. Note on the card identifies the fruit as peaches. For a time peaches were more lucrative than raisins in Selma to the point Selma declared itself "Home of the Peach". Most peaches were sun-dried because of the lack of refrigeration but with improved rail car refrigeration in 1907 orchards expanded. Libby, McNeill and Libby opened a peach cannery in 1911. Selma's fresh peach peak occurred in 1924 when area growers shipped 2,114 carloads. Years of low peach prices led to the industry's decline and the changing of Selma's signs to "Raisin Capital of the World". Description An account of the resource A portion of the 45 mile long flume constructed in 1893-1894 by Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company to carry bundles of cut lumber from Shaver Lake to Clovis, California. The use of wooden waterways provided an efficient and practical means of transporting cut lumber out of the mountains and was much cheaper than constructing a railroad up to the mills from the valley. Water for the flume came from Shaver Lake which was also used to store uncut logs. Fresno Flume and Irrigation later sold to Ira Bennett who created the new firm Fresno Flume and Lumber Company of Nevada in 1912. A portion of the flume collapsed in 1914 after an unusually heavy snowstorm and was not rebuilt. The remaining portions of the flume were sold for $20,000 for the scrap value of the lumber and were mostly dismantled. Portions of the flume in inaccessible terrain were simply left in place to decay.
