Description An account of the resource Untitled postcard containing five individual photographs of the five principal Fresno banks and their location. Fresno National Bank was organized on May 1, 1888 and located at the northwest corner of Tulare and J (Fulton) streets in a new three-story brick building erected at a cost of $70,000. It was purchased by the Bank of Italy on October 21, 1916. Peoples Savings Bank of Fresno was incorporated December 9, 1890 and opened for business in the Hughes Block on the northwest corner of Tulare and I (Broadway) streets. This three-story building was constructed by Thomas E. Hughes in 1888. First National Bank of Fresno was organized on March 16, 1885. In 1891 an ornate three-story building was built on the northeast corner of I (Broadway) and Mariposa streets. The bank occupied the ground floor, with professional offices on the upper floors. Bank of Central California was organized on February 21, 1887. The bank initially occupied this narrow two-story brick building on the south side of Mariposa Street, built for the bank by Louis Einstein, across the alley from Einstein's Pioneer Store, which faced H Street. Farmers Bank of Fresno was incorporated on March 8, 1882. Local history books do not identify the bank's initial location, but in 1889 the bank moved into a new three-story building on the corner of I (Broadway) and Mariposa streets. Mention of Fresno National Bank (now Bank of Italy) dates this postcard between 1916 when the transfer occurred and 1928 when the Bank of Italy changed its name to Bank of America. Some of the dates on this postcard don't seem to compare with any significant event. Description An account of the resource Photo of intersection of L Street and Fresno Street with the Southern Methodist Church on the corner. Mill Ditch visible on Fresno Street in front of the church. This irrigation ditch was built in 1878 by Moses J. Church to power his Champion Flour Mill at the corner of Fresno and N streets. Ditch later walled by planks, braced with timbers, and spanned by narrow plank bridges. Mill Ditch was filled-in in March 1892 after public outcry of it being dangerous and unsightly. Description An account of the resource The Fresno Weekly Expositor Newspaper first made its appearance in Millerton Calif. on 27 April 1870, founded by J.W. Ferguson acting as both editor and owner. Moved to Fresno in 1874 along with the county seat, located on J (Fulton) Street near the corner of Tulare. Became a daily paper in 1881 and moved into a new two-story building in 1888. After numerous ownership changes, a syndicate called the Fresno Publishing Company took over the newspaper in 1897, but the financial difficulties forced the paper to close on 1 September, 1898. Mr. Leopold (Lee) Gundelfinger was the fire chief, is seated in the center of the front row of this photograph. The other fire fighters starting in the back row, left to right, Charles Wainwright, John Elam, Lephonso Burks, Harry Rea, Charles DeLong, Louis Einstein, Charles Overholzer, and N.D. Gilbert. The front row from left to right are Fred Kramer, George Strine, Frank Tadlock, Steve Spano, John Dwyer, Wm. Lawrenson, Lee Gundelfinger (Chief), Will Silvers, John Welsh, Wm. H. McKenzie, Andrew Basso, and John Boyle. The Fresno Fire Commission was formed in May 14, 1881, having two cisterns installed and later a fire engine in July 1884. The photographer was on G Street looking northeast towards Kern. The sign in the background says "Planing Mill", probably Madary's Planing Mill located on the corner of H Street and Kern. Floods threatened to wipe out Fresno every winter owing to its location as the sink of four creeks of Dry Creek, Red Banks, Dog Creek, and Fancher Creek.
