Description An account of the resource On 16 February 1884, flood waters covered every street in Fresno. All basements and ground floors were flooded. The only means of transportation within the city was by boat. This photo depicts the situation on J street looking northwest from Fresno street. Floods threatened to wipe out Fresno every winter because Fresno was located in the sink of four creeks. Dry Creek ran just to the north of town, Red Banks and Dog Creek merged in the flat lands to the east, and Fancher Creek ran nearby with the center of Fresno as the confluent point. Description An account of the resource On 16 February 1884, flood waters covered every street in Fresno. Floods threatened to wipe out Fresno every winter because Fresno was located in the sink of four creeks: Dry Creek ran just to the north of town ; Red Banks and Dog Creek merged in the flat lands to the east ; and Fancher Creek ran nearby with the center of Fresno as the confluent point. This photo depicts the situation on K Street with the photographer looking north from Fresno Street. The Mill Ditch is visible in the foreground on Fresno Street. This irrigation ditch was built in 1878 by Moses J. Church to power his Champion Flour Mill at the corner of Fresno and N Streets. Several narrow plank bridges are seen spanning the ditch. The first building on the right is the J. Williams Blacksmith and Wagon Shop. The next structure is the F. Banta Eureka Planing Mill. The steeple of the Methodist Church can be seen in the distance. Homes built during the 1870s were little more than simple frame cottages. Construction became more elaborate after the 1880s. It is known that William Betteridge built Fresno's first brick home in 1882, with five rooms and a big bay window. Description An account of the resource Jackrabbits often ravaged orchards and vineyards. Fresno settlers soon saw their profits decreasing and organized a campaign to deal with the problem. This photo shows a method borrowed from the Indians. A fence is created in the shape of a V. The wings of this V would extend about 2 miles. Citizens would line up far above the open end of the V and drive the rabbits. The rabbits would run into the V and when they got into the bottle neck they were corralled and beaten with clubs. Firearms were not allowed because of the safety of the people. Between 1888 and 1897 there were 217 public drives alone in California accounting for approximately 500,000 dead rabbits.
