The Hippodrome was originally the Barton Opera House, opened on September 29, 1890 by vineyardist Robert Barton. Performances included variety, melodrama troupes and beginning in 1901, vaudeville. The Hughes Hotel, built in 1888 by Mr. Thomas Hughes, can be seen on the right. The sign indicates the "New Hughes Hotel" after remodeling of the original 1888 structure. On the left is the Commercial Hotel at 1811 Tulare with the Bank of Italy sign seen in the distance at the corner of Tulare and J streets (later to become Fulton).
