Description An account of the resource The first concrete was poured at Friant Dam on July 29, 1940. Four small, diesel-electric cars ran on two tracks each transporting 4-cubic-yard buckets. The cars were lifted from the track by two 30-ton gantry cranes and lowered on to the forms. Steel trestles standing 210 feet high, and 2.200 feet long, supported the track system. Along the trestles ran two huge hammerhead cranes with 300-foot arms and a "whirley" crane with a 125-foot boom. Supplementing the hammerheads and revolving derricks were a pair of stiff-leg derricks with 180-foot booms. This system poured 5,500 cubic yards of concrete each day. The final yard of concrete was placed on June 16, 1942. A total of 2,130,480 cubic yards of concrete went into building Friant Dam, ranking the dam as the fourth largest dam in the world behind Boulder, Grand Coulee, and Shasta Dams. This camp town opened in January 1938 on a fifty-acre parcel near the town of Friant. The camp consisted of 50 houses, an office building, and two 48-man dormitories. The camp was not large enough to house all the Friant Dam workers so many laborers lived in nearby Fresno, Clovis, and Friant, driving or taking the bus to work. Description An account of the resource This point has been known by various names since miners first visited in the 1850s. It has been called Converse Ferry, Jones Ferry, Hamptonville, and with the arrival of the railroad was rechristened "Pollasky". The name came from Marcus Pollasky, sent to Fresno by the Southern Pacific Railroad, to promote a railroad eastward from Fresno over the Sierras. The first train ran October 1, 1892. Investors intended to turn the hamlet into a major city but the planned improvements never materialized and Marcus Pollasky quietly departed Fresno County. By 1921 it was called Friant after Thomas Friant, partner in the White-Friant Lumber Company who died in 1927. Description An account of the resource The San Joaquin River Basin encompasses nearly 15,000 square miles. The river's headwaters begin life as snow on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains seen in the background. Most of the Sierra's annual average 80 to 90 inches of snowpack eventually melts toward the valley floor during the summer. Friant Dam was built at Pollasky (called Friant after 1921) in the 1940s creating Millerton Lake. Because of the number and variety of individuals and groups it benefits, the San Joaquin River has earned the title of "California's hardest working and most fought-over waterway". Description An account of the resource With two American flags flying from its top rim and with the sign seen in this picture the bucket delivered the first load of concrete to Friant Dam at 2 O'clock in the afternoon of Monday, July 29, 1940. The ceremony was arranged by the Central Valley Project Association in cooperation with the Fresno Chamber of Commerce and witnessed by a crowd of several hundred people. Although the people in the photo remain unidentified, the Fresno Bee reported in its July 29, 1940 issue among those attending were Walter R. Slocum, superintendent for the contracting concern ; Judge A.R. Description An account of the resource Picture of the Hotel Grand, on the corner of G and 12th Street in Reedley, California, taken sometime between March 1905 and 1917. This three-story, forty-room hotel was built in 1891-92 by the Pacific Improvement Company, a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It opened in July 1892 as the New Reedley Hotel and changed names several times over the years becoming the Hotel Grand in March 1905. The balconies were removed in 1921 and the third floor was removed after a fire in May 1929.
