The card is postmarked at Big Creek, California on 31 November 1912 meaning this is probably one of the three dams constructed between 1911 and 1913 to create the Huntington Lake Reservoir, the first reservoir built as part of the "Initial Development." The elaborate wooden trestlework was needed to hoist the mixed concrete and chute it down onto the work face. Description An account of the resource Front view of Huntington Lake lodge with guests visible. Based on the flags draped over the entrance it appears to be the 4th of July. The lodge opened on July 4, 1915 so this photo could be of the opening day. The lodge was a combination style of Swiss chalet and California rustic accented with a stone chimney. The building was erected 500 feet from the shore of Huntington Lake. The Huntington Lake area, three miles north of Big Creek, developed as a recreation center after the hydroelectric dams went in and the lake formed in the early years of the 20th century. The pine-fringed lake was named after Henry E. Huntington, president of the Pacific Light and Power Company who financed the earliest work at Big Creek. This time frame covers several significant moments in the County's history, including the County Centennial (1956), City of Fresno diamond jubilee (1960), the opening of the Fulton Mall, and the naming of the City of Fresno as an All-American City in 1967. It also captured the essence of the County's smaller communities prior to their rapid expansion, and the disasters of the 1983 Coalinga earthquake and 2020 Creek Fire. Photos are arranged by APN and through our fantastic volunteers, there is a database linking APN's to addresses. A total of 21,036 sheets of photos (approximately 100,000 individual photos) have been scanned and linked to more than 112,000 addresses.
