Description An account of the resource Picture of Reedley Grammar School, later known as Westside/Washington, located at the intersection of 12th and K streets, Reedley, Calif. Constructed with Romanesque Revival architectural elements. Built in 1890-1891, the two-story brick structure consisted of three finished rooms on the first floor, an auditorium space on the second floor with seating for 250, and featured an adjoining tower. When the Lincoln School was built on the opposite (east) side of Reedley in 1911, Reedley Grammar then became known as the Westside or Washington School. The building was demolished in the early 1950s and replaced with a new campus. The Reedley Joint District, of which Reedley Grammar/Westside/Washington School was a part, was created in 1898, and incorporated into the Kings Canyon Unified School District in 1966. Description An account of the resource Photo taken 26 January 1914 during Kings River overflow near Reedley, California. People are viewing the damage caused by the flood. Message on the back of the card says the new bridge was near the Reedley cemetery. The Fresno Morning Republican of this date reported the "Kings River at the highest point in 50 years" and went on to report how the "San Joaquin, Kings, and Kern Rivers rose at the rate of a foot an hour yesterday and last night". Rain and flood damage in Fresno County was estimated at $50,000. Description An account of the resource A scene of destruction after the 1902 Reedley fire. W.W. Green's drug store pictured here was one of the fifteen businesses destroyed in the early morning blaze. Mr. W.W. Green was Reedley's first druggist establishing his business in 1889. The entire business district of Reedley was destroyed in a disastrous fire the morning of 11 August 1902. The Fresno Morning Republican newspaper reported the following day how the fire broke out at approximately 12:45 in the morning starting in a Chinese restaurant called Ah Sam. There was speculation in the press this fire was an act of arson. The estimated loss was $70,000.
