Description An account of the resource Picture of Round Mountain Elementary School, a one-room structure with surrounding veranda constructed in 1884. Western Stick architectural style. This building replaced the first schoolhouse, built in 1872 and destroyed by fire in the early 1880s. The replacement schoolhouse was first situated on the east side of Fancher Creek, just north of Shaw Avenue. It was later moved to the intersection of Ashlan and Madsen avenues, and enlarged by moving three of the outer walls even with the roofline. The school was vacated in 1947, torn down and its lumber used to build a private residence. The Round Mountain District was created in 1873, annexed the Eureka District in 1904 and a portion of the Fancher District in 1914, and merged with the Fairview and Gray Colony districts in 1947 to form the Fairmont Union District. This entity, in turn, was incorporated into the Sanger Unified School District in 1965. Description An account of the resource Rowell (Fresno Municipal) Auditorium, located at 912 L Street, at the corner of L and Kern Streets. Postcard published by the Acmegraph Company, Chicago. Financed by Dr. Chester Rowell (1844-1912), onetime mayor of Fresno and one of its most prominent citizens. The building was designed by Fresno architect Charles K. Kirby, Jr. (1871-1936). Construction began in 1911, but financing difficulties delayed completion and dedication until March 12, 1914. The building played host to many different types of events, including sporting matches, conventions and political rallies. It began to lose business after the Fresno Memorial Auditorium’s 1936 opening. After years of declining business and physical deterioration, the auditorium was razed in January 1960. A portion of the Fresno County Plaza (formerly Del Webb/Fresno’s Towne House) now occupies the site. Addressed to Mr. Eugene Kinney, 1716 1st, Sacramento Cal. Postmarked AUG 18, 1913.
