Maxwell & Mudge was founded by John Franklin “Frank” Maxwell (1867-1955), a West Virginia native who migrated to the Fresno area in 1889. After going back East, he learned the photography business in Valparaiso, Indiana, and opened a Fresno studio in 1896. Two years later, he took in Achilles C. Mudge (1868-1963) as a partner. The business was situated in various downtown Fresno locations, with Maxwell working primarily as a portrait photographer and Mudge handling buildings and the local landscape. The partnership was dissolved in October 1922; Maxwell sold the studio to his sons in 1946 but continued to work there until shortly before his death. Mudge moved to Lakeshore on Huntington Lake and ran a photography, card and gift shop there for many years. This two story wood frame house with a dozen rooms was constructed in 1869 from lumber brought on wagons from Stockton. According to Vandor, it had a "large and cheerful fireplace" and had been "a center of hospitality for visitors, and for many social and musical functions and happy family reunions." This honored and prosperous pioneering couple lived in the home until their deaths in the 1920's. Their son Robert Phillips continued to live there into the 1950's.
