The building, located at Road 128 and Railroad Drive, is currently occupied by La Esperanza Mexican Restaurant. The store was built by Kuzo Shinoda, maternal grandfather of Eileeen Abe-Liesias. Title A name given to the resource Joe Ely, Last of the Yokohl Indians, Tulare County, Calif. Description An account of the resource Joe Ely, of Exeter, CA, was a member of the Yokohl ("beautiful valley") subtribe of the Yokuts Indian tribe. He was born in 1869, and died at age 42 in 1911. The Yokohls' head village was located near the river channel north of Highway 69 on what now is known as the Rocky Hill Ranch. Joe was the son of an Indian called Ely, who worked on the Hugh Hamilton ranch. When Joe was 12, his father died and the Hamiltons took him in. Shortly after that, Hugh Hamilton died and Joe was taken in by that man's uncle, another Hugh Hamilton. Joe learned all farming skills, including handling large teams of horses pulling threshers. When the Hamiltons moved into Exeter, Joe learned the barbering trade. Title A name given to the resource Nathaniel Vise, for Whom Visalia, Calif., Was Named Description An account of the resource Visalia, CA, was named for Nathaniel Vise, a Kentucky native born in 1810 who later owned a restaurant in San Francisco that featured bear meat. He became know as "the bear hunter." In 1852, he filed on a quarter acre in what now is Visalia, near the current (2009) Tulare County Library, thus starting the town. He also voted in that year's election to form Tulare County. He led Visalia's competition with "Woodsville" to be the county's leading town. He was a wanderer, engaging in several restaurant enterprises, and also hunting and fur trading. He ultimately died in 1882 in Texarkana, Texas, of cyclone-related injuries.
