Description
An account of the resource
The first concrete was poured at Friant Dam on July 29, 1940. Four small, diesel-electric cars ran on two tracks each transporting 4-cubic-yard buckets. The cars were lifted from the track by two 30-ton gantry cranes and lowered on to the forms. Steel trestles standing 210 feet high, and 2.200 feet long, supported the track system. Along the trestles ran two huge hammerhead cranes with 300-foot arms and a "whirley" crane with a 125-foot boom. Supplementing the hammerheads and revolving derricks were a pair of stiff-leg derricks with 180-foot booms. This system poured 5,500 cubic yards of concrete each day. The final yard of concrete was placed on June 16, 1942. A total of 2,130,480 cubic yards of concrete went into building Friant Dam, ranking the dam as the fourth largest dam in the world behind Boulder, Grand Coulee, and Shasta Dams.

Description
An account of the resource
Annotation on the back of the photo tells how the Friant Dam will sit "right in the V" where the earth has been removed. During construction of the Dam, powder charges helped remove over 1.2 million cubic yards of loose material during foundation excavation. The annotation also tells us the structure in the foreground "is diversion channel where the river will soon flow". On two occasions, first in 1940 and again in 1941, Bureau of Reclamation's engineers diverted the San Joaquin River to place the dam's concrete. The river's course was first channeled through a 36-foot timber flume in July 1940 allowing workers to excavate and pour concrete. In the spring of 1941, with the foundation in place, engineers again moved the "river in a box" so concreting could continue.

Description
An account of the resource
Friant Dam pictured here was classified as ready for service in November 1944. In July 1945 Peter Kiewit & Sons Company of Omaha, Nebraska was awarded the contract to build the Friant-Kern Canal. The Friant-Kern Canal outlet works are located on the left side of the spillway. The canal travels in a southerly direction over 152 miles carrying water from Millerton Lake to the Kern River four miles west of Bakersfield. Excavation work began in August 1945. On July 9, 1949, 2,500 people watched a former Reclamation location engineer and a citrus grower from the town of Lindsay usher in the first delivery of water. The system became fully operational on June 29, 1951. Except for the Delta-Mendota Canal, the Friant-Kern is the largest lined canal in the West.

Description
An account of the resource
Friant Dam under construction on the San Joaquin River. The Friant Dam ground breaking was on November 5, 1939 with Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes, as guest speaker. Griffith Company and Bent Company of Los Angeles were awarded the Friant Dam contract and given 1200 days from October 1939 to finish the job. The final yard of concrete was placed on June 16, 1942 and the government classified the dam as ready for service in November 1942. This straight, concrete, gravity dam, became 315 feet high when completed and formed Millerton Lake as its reservoir. Millerton Lake first stored water on February 21, 1944, supplying irrigation water to farmers to the north and south as well as affording flood control for the lower San Joaquin River areas.

Description

Picture of the dam construction on the Big Creek-San Joaquin River hydroelectric development on the western side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The card is postmarked at Big Creek, California on 31 November 1912 meaning this is probably one of the three dams constructed between 1911 and 1913 to create the Huntington Lake Reservoir, the first reservoir built as part of the "Initial Development." The elaborate wooden trestlework was needed to hoist the mixed concrete and chute it down onto the work face.
