Drying Fruit at Selma California
Farm produce -- California -- Fresno County -- Photographs.; Fruits -- California -- Fresno County -- Photographs.; Selma (Calif.) -- Photographs.
Drying yard in Selma, California. Note on the card identifies the fruit as peaches. For a time peaches were more lucrative than raisins in Selma to the point Selma declared itself "Home of the Peach". Most peaches were sun-dried because of the lack of refrigeration but with improved rail car refrigeration in 1907 orchards expanded. Libby, McNeill and Libby opened a peach cannery in 1911. Selma's fresh peach peak occurred in 1924 when area growers shipped 2,114 carloads. Years of low peach prices led to the industry's decline and the changing of Selma's signs to "Raisin Capital of the World".
