The tree was discovered in 1862 by Joseph Hardin Thomas and named in 1867 by Lucretia Baker. Charles E. Lee of Sanger organized the first Christmas Day celebration at the tree in 1925. The following year President Coolidge designated the General Grant Tree as the "Nation's Christmas Tree" on 28 April 1926.
